Combining wah & volume?

Some of you may have noticed that I use a vintage Italian Mister Cry Baby in my otherwise modern pedalboard. I do this to get round having to have two separate pedals, making the board bigger (I don’t play stadiums).

This vintage pedal is the only such product I could find.  It sounds good and mercifully doesn’t suck too much tone, but it’s a cranky old unit which needs a bit of maintenance/TLC.

The volume doesn’t go down to zero because the range of the pedal for wah and volume are different, but it’s still good for taking things down or doing swells. (I can mute things completely using my tuner if need to).

But all this got me thinking, why does nobody make a decent modern one? Morley make one, but it’s a huge slab of nasty folded metal sheet and anyway the switch between volume and wah is on the side so you can’t activate with your foot. Duh.

There’s quite a lot of stuff about this on the web, much of it quite old, which suggests demand for such a product. I think I’ll commission one and If it’s any good I’ll start selling them. I’m thinking two completely discreet parallel paths switched by a toe switch under the pedal, probably housed in a Cry Baby-type casing….

Stefanos Tsoureils plays some of my guitars… Rather well.

…Stefanos came over yesterday and played a number of my older guitars.  Fantastic playing, a great afternoon.  You can see the video courtesy of Mopomer, also present, here.  Not on the video, but we also went on to try out the Ceriatone Dumble clone triamped through the Axe-Fx, Mesa Fifty/Fifty and two vintage EV12L’s.  Pretty sublime sound.

Egnater Tweaker 15, part 2….

…two gigs this weekend, a wedding function and a pub gig, about 100 punters at each.

The wedding gig was a bit stiff and the room was cavernous, taller than it was wide with a vaulted ceiling which made it loud and bright.  The 15w Egnater coped but the conditions didn’t enable it to distinguish itself.

It came into its own at the pub gig.  I used the Eric Johnson Strat with Lollar Special S pickups, the Barber Burn Unit set for clean boost and medium drive, and the amp on a clean AC30 setting.  Great tone, perfect level for controlling everything with the volume control.

Can’t wait to play out again with that rig.  Two minutes to set up and take down, went into the back of my mini convertible with plenty of room for another band member and her gear too.

Egnater Tweaker 15 head…

…arrived a couple of days ago.  Fantastic little amp, lots of sounds inside it, most of them really, really good.  Fills the gap between my 30W Egnater Rebel combo and my 6W VHT head.

Bruce Egnater is managing to manage the Chinese supply line really well to make extraordinary amps which offer incredible value….

Another gearfest

Tried the new pedalboards through the Ceriatone, then thought of taking the pedalboard’s stereo out into the Axe-Fx to create an uber triamped rig. All worked fine, no noise/hums and sounds sublime. Eric Johnson!

Also tried the Ceriatone’s fx send into the VHT Special 6 Ultra’s return, adding much earlier power amp breakup to the Ceriatone’s peerless preamp tones. Another whole palette of fab sounds.

Yet more gear on the way, so more posts soon…

My big rack is finally operational

After between three and twenty-four years, depending on how you look at it, my big rack rig is now operational.

For a pic and the schematic, see here.  The long version of the story is here.

I am indebted to Mike Hill of Mike Hill Services (MHS) in Milton Keynes UK for his help in sorting out what had defeated numerous others.

And at last I can get to play, gig and enjoy the folly to the full!  Excited, me?  Just a bit, yeah…

Ceriatone with stereo fx

Just connected the fx out of the Ceriatone to input 2 of my Axe-Fx and out into the Mesa Fifty/Fifty and two EV12L’s in open-backed cabs.  The Ax-Fx is set up with a patch that enables switching /mixing in of chorus, delay and/or reverb.  That way you get the pure tone of the amp and its cab with really clean stereo modulation fx.  Eric Johnson, watch out!  Happy holidays all – it’s great to have some downtime to really get into this gear.
